extra-curricular activities balance with school
In today's society, extra-curricular activities are a big deal. Some parents can be really hard on their kids and as educators we need to see that first-hand. As teachers, we are going to see a lot of students that come in and out of our classrooms that are involved in these activities and we need to make sure that they are expected nothing less than the other students just because they have other things going on. Extra-curricular activities are a big deal but school comes first and if it starts to affect the way a student is progressing, it is our duty as a teacher to notice it and try to make a change so that it doesn't get out of hand. Sports are a big thing these days but other than a few instances, they are not something that someone can make a living off of and students need to realize that their education comes before these activities because it is their education that is going to get them the job to make a living off of for the rest of their lives.

I think that often times, the parents or guardians are the issue, rather than the student. In elementary and even middle school, this does not impact student learning too much, but as they get to high school it can become a very important issue for some families. I think another factor is your districs administration and policies regarding these types of things. You made a valid point regarding how many students will actually depend on sports for a career, but some families are not always realistic either, or they refer to the collegiate level as well. I also agree with your statement regarding have the same expectations for student learning, regardless of their other activities.
ReplyDeleteStrong ending argument. These students and parents must realize that sports careers are often short-lived, and accept that the students should be doing well academically to ensure success in their future.
ReplyDeleteEducation is very important in any persons life. Extra-curricular activities can definitely make it hard for students to thrive academically. It is important for us educators to show interest in their activities but also be that driving force to show them school comes before sports.
